Who We Are

We are a Non-Profit organization dedicated to
Sail and Power Boating, Maritime Education, and Civic Service

Mid-Hudson Power Squadron serves the NY map highlighting Ulster and Dutchess countiesDutchess and Ulster County areas of New York. The Hudson River is nearby and many club members are seen boating with their kayaks, canoes, jet skis, sail, paddle and power boats. Also, during the months of April, May and June of each year some members are even found fishing from their boats or alongshore for the coveted striped bass in these world-classspawning grounds.

Mid-Hudson is one of 15 squadrons in District 2. Each squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons® "America’s Boating Club" with headquarters in Raleigh, N.C. Our National publication is called The Ensign. This national non-profit organization founded in 1914 is dedicated to safer boating through education with MHPS being chartered in 1926 (see "History" page for details). Our members share a common interest in boating even though all members DO NOT own boats. We meet socially the third Wednesday of each month at different area restaurants (see "Calendar" page for details).  In addition, the club goes cruising several times a year from May through November.

MHPS members own powerboats, sailboats, houseboats, personal watercraft, rowboats, canoes and kayaks.  Some don’t even own a boat but have an abiding passion to learn more about boating and nautical science.  With over 125 members, MHPS is one of the larger USPS squadrons in the northeast.

Our members are active cruisers and have sailed not only on the Hudson River but the entire Atlantic coast, the Great Lakes, the NY canals, the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas, and various islands in the Caribbean.

The primary mission of MHPS is boating education and safety. Our course instructors include former Navy officers, mechanics, computer experts, business owners, and teachers. All willingly share their skills.

The Triangle to the right shows our three areas of primary interest. The "Education" page shows the many courses available to our members as well as classes offered to the public as a part of our Civic Service. Additional civic contributions include free "Vessel Safety Checks" as well as collecting information about local waters to assist NOAA in upgrading nautical charts.

In conjunction with the US Coast Guard and US Coast Guard Auxiliary, MHPS conducts voluntary Vessel Safety Checks to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Vessels passing inspection are given the nationally recognized

Mid-Hudson Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons. Which was founded in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is America’s largest boating educational organization, with more than 50,000 members in over 450 squadrons.

By completing a better boating course you could be eligible for a lower rate on your boat insurance.

And our courses also qualify for the PWC endorsement, which is now a requirement in New York State.

That’s who we are and what we do - thank you for taking the time to learn more about Mid-Hudson Power Squadron. For information about membership, or if you have any other questions, please contact Pat Smalley.
